From the supplier: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced in Oct 1996 the first recognized death of a child due to an air-bag inflation when the child was properly seatbelted. The NHTSA notes that since 1986 air bags have saved 1,136 lives but killed 28 children and 19 adults. Infants to 12-year-old children are at highest risk, though adults under 5'3" face a higher risk than an average-sized man. In Aug 1996 the NHTSA called for air bags that respond to the size of the person before them, and for new warnings.
